Only 20 minutes north of downtown San Diego lies this tiny seaside hideaway dating back to the 1880’s. With just over 2 miles of coastline and pristine beaches and a quaint village of the finest shops and restaurants, many of which overlook the ocean, visitors can get around on foot or beach cruiser without needing a car.
The town of approximately 4,500 is bordered by calm water lagoons on each end, one of which is affectionately known as “Dog Beach” where dogs are free to romp and play off leash most of the year. Del Mar is home to the world famous Del Mar Racetrack, the annual county fair and the newly renovated La Auberge Resort. There are several parks for residents and visitors to enjoy. For an ideal picnic location, a romantic sunset walk, free summer concerts, or a spectacular wedding location, try Powerhouse Park or the adjoining Seagrove Park. For the little ones, there is a wonderful playground, affectionately called the “Tot Lot” just next to Powerhouse Park.
Activities are endless in Del Mar. Only one mile to the south is Torrey Pines State Beach which offers breathtaking ocean views from most of the hiking trails, tranquil beach walks, terrific uphill road biking or if you are less motivated, great sunbathing on uncrowded beaches. Golf at the world famous Torrey Pines Golf Course is not to be missed. The green fees are still reasonable and the views are priceless.
The village has enough shopping opportunities to keep you busy for days. And bring your four legged friend as Del Mar is very dog friendly. It is not unusual for shop owners to have water and treats for Fido.
