Incorporated in 1986, with a current population of 60,000, Encinitas is located along six miles of Pacific coastline just 30 minutes north of downtown San Diego. The charming downtown district is over 100 years old and features historic architecture, sidewalk cafes perfect for al fresco dining, delicious cuisine at charming eateries, quaint shops and a variety of coffee shops, including Starbucks. The town is very dog friendly and many shops and restaurants allow your canine companion to accompany you shopping or eating outside.
Favorite local spots includes the local historic theater, La Paloma, where classic surf movies as well as the
most current movies are shown, Swami’s café, a great place to have breakfast or lunch after an epic surf session at the famous surf break of the same name, The Pannikin, a train station that has been converted into a fantastic coffee shop, Henry’s Organic Market, and of course all of the famous surf spots along the 6-mile coastline.
The city boasts a significant flower growing industry and many locals claim that it is the Flower Growing Capital of the U.S. During the Spring, the fields are full of colorful blooms. The Quail Botanical Gardens has the largest display of bamboo in the world and is a beautiful place to visit. The Self Realization Center, situated on the bluff overlooking the ocean, has a serene garden setting, perfect for quiet meditation.
Activities are endless in this seaside community. Golf enthusiasts can enjoy the ocean views while playing at the Encinitas Ranch Golf Course and public tennis courts are available at the local parks. Other options are bicycling the Coast Highway, hiking the San Elijo Lagoon, playing volleyball at Moonlight Beach and of course, surfing one of the many famous surf breaks.
Regular events in Encinitas include: The Annual April Street Fair, The Annual Fall Festival, The Annual Oktoberfest, The Classic Car Cruise Nights and The Wavecrest Woodie Meet (the largest rally of wooden bodied vehicles in the world).
